Pumi Colors

Pumi come in a variety of different colors, but only certain colors are permitted in the show ring. Permitted colors include:

• Black (KB)

• Silver (KB)

• Fawn (Ay)

• White (ee)

• Recessive Black (a)

Other possible colors include:

• Black and Tan (at)

• Wolf Sable (aw)

• Dilute Grey (d)

• Dilute Brown (b)

Only solid colors are permitted to compete, but there are no genetic health concerns currently associated with the off standard colors. On the A-locus, black and tan is the most prevalent gene across the breed. Breeders should not intentionally breed for off-standard colors, but it is not unusual to see one occur in a well bred litter.

Pumi have a “fading gene” associated with our K-locus. All of our grey Pumi are born-black and fade to varying shades of grey. We can usually guess the shade by looking at puppy paw pads shortly after birth, where they will have silver coloring between the toes if they are going to fade out. Pumi can be “born grey,” but this is a fault and they most often have dilute pigment in addition to a silver coat color. We color test all of our breeding dogs and puppies via the Optimal Selection Genetic Panel. We are able to provide an estimate for coat color statistics for each litter that we breed.
