Orthopedic Foundation for Animals

Overall, the Pumi is a hardy and healthy breed. We have certain tests designated by the Hungarian Pumi Club of America that are considered “required” tests and others that are considered “recommended” tests. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals is a non-profit organization that works as both a registry and guide to different diseases. We complete all required tests on our dogs prior to breeding. If you are unable to locate our test results, please reach out and we will provide them for you. The following tests are required to be submitted to the OFA for evaluation and rating.

  • Hip Dysplasia

  • Patellar Luxation

  • Elbow Dysplasia (optional)

  • CAER Eye Exam (optional)

Owners submit x-rays of hip and elbow joints to the OFA and receive a grading in return. Passing hips are Excellent, Good, and Fair. Failing hips are Mild, Moderate, and Severe. Passing elbows are rated Normal and failing elbows are given a rating of 1-3, depending on severity. Patellar luxation is a physical examination test where the examiner makes the rating in-person. All veterinarians can complete the Patellar Luxation test. Patella’s are evaluated as Normal or given a grade 1-4, depending on severity.

Optimal Selection Genetic Panel

The Pumi breed community overwhelmingly utilizes Optimal Selection for all of our genetic testing. This is because they co-ordinate with Laboklin in Europe and possess the largest DNA repository for Pumi worldwide. The Optimal Selection Genetic Panel tests for over 270+ genetic health risks and 50+ traits. The two required genetic tests are Degenerative Myelopathy and Primary Lens Luxation. The Optimal Selection report can be submitted to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals and recorded in their database for an additional fee. We perform this genetic panel on all puppies prior to them leaving our home, even if we know they will be clear by parentage for these genetic risks.
